Meeting Week 6 - 31st October

Attended all (Absent - Irini and Toby - due to illness).

This week we worked on A1, working on filling in densities. Simon came prepared with a design for the hobbit houses and a sketchup model - detailing the exact placement and spacing of the houses to the north of the site - in order to maximise the housing density.

We started to think about our final presentation - theatrical elements etc.

The housing suggested by Simon, is too steep at present - perhaps we need to think of the context of the area - materiality etc - related to housing design.

- Asked to create a topography map - Simon is in charge of this and creating the sketchup model - to be printed.
- Amy is in charge of the creation of the initial masterplan from today - to provide a layout for Simon.
- Janelle is in charge of repositioning the original circulation and transport maps.
- Elizabeth is in charge of creating a comparable refined - before and after masterplan - more like block zoning plan at this stage, than a refined design masterplan.
- Amy and Elizabeth are in charge of the ppt - but this may be filtered to Irini and Toby.
- Janelle is also in charge of creating the concept diagram and soundbite (refining).

Look up XTU Architects - innovative use of algae.

Concept Development

The general consensus among group members is the regeneration of the our site. Industries comprise most of the landscape, however this too appears to be declining. Our main aim is to rejuvenate the site by ecological diversity and new sustainable green energies.

We started thinking of the site as a cellular organism,  -  being self sustaining and having the ability to regenerate. From this concept we coined

"The Reincarnation of Barking of Barking Riverside : evolution of the eco cell."

Irini started developing the idea further

However after class yesterday, Benz suggested that we think of the site as different cells- more abstract, like algae cells, with each cell unit representing a green initiative or agenda. He also helped us refine the slogan................ so for now it's

"Renewing Barking Riverside : Industrial Revolution to Evolution"

Meeting Week 5 - 24th of October

Attended all - (Amy absent due to illness).

Everyone has been assigned an Urban design theorist/ Urban design theory book. We are all to derive a drawing from these theories, related/applied to our site.

Elizabeth - A Pattern Language - Christopher Alexander.
Toby - Concise Townscape
Amy - Kevin Lynch - The Image of the City
Janelle - City form and Natural Process
Simon - Design With Nature
Irini - City as Landscape

We have decided to create our model as a digital model - using sketchup.

Useful documents to download:
- Urban Design Compendium - two additions available online.

Keep working on slogan, soundbite, concept development, eye-sore its, concept diagram.

Survey and analysis needs to be improved, and presented in a better way - pixellated at present.
SWOT - needs to be simplified.

Today we looked at everyones initial zoning plans for the site. From this information, we decided upon a final masterplan indicating where of all of the concepts for our design will be located.

Benz suggested to look up the East London Crossing - circa 1980.

Key to our site is the topography and drainage.
Think about a wetland centre - the wetland centre of the east.
Need to think about the spatial layout - how big the houses are - where they will be.
- Look at Bow Yard - Somerset.
- Decide on housing densities.

Simon will focus on the circulation and transport links. Everyone else focus on their design theory drawings.
I will be focussing on creating a rough masterplan of the agreed layout today.

How to solve a problem like Barking...?

Ideas

Liz's ideas in response to emails circulated and request for ideas by other members of the group

Hi guys, I really love all of your ideas – it seems that everyone is generally thinking in the same direction anyway – lots of overlaps.

Simon, I love all of your ideas and want to incorporate these into the design in its entirety.

I think make it a specialized area – which blurs the private/public division – which is key to produce a beneficial environment. Focuses on bioengineering and innovative green engineering/resources – the more cutting edge the better.

I would like to create a metronised boat system – use of fuel cells for buses – applied to boats – a new green energy transport system – focusing on the under used thames – perhaps it works under water – through glass tunnels – you can see the Thames – improve the biodiversity of the thames – create a much more naturalized thames – with reeds and naturalized planting – that help to remove the impurities and pollutants.

Rain gardens to act as SUDS – alter the curvature of the land in places a la Charles Jencks:

Topographically artistic – but not skimping on biodiversity – use of wildflower meadows and self-sustaining planting – that requires little to no maintenance – native plants – soil is clay so fertile, and therefore opportunity for lots of different types of native plants.

Green roofs – but green forests instead – large scale planting – sky forests.

With walkways that extend above and beyond the area – bringing a new level – over these raised parks and forests.

Will work as SUDS.

Islands cutting into the thames running off the sunken walkways – allowing for isolation for birds to nest. Creative play of  earthworks – geometrical  informed by harsh geometry and axial framework of matisse paintings.

Slow down the run of water -

Soften the landscape – but also a more innovative use of planting – so that landscape isn’t synonymous with trying to recreate the countryside in the city – create a literal urban jungle/forest.

Retaining walls – using soil to create abstract walkways and monuments cutting through the site – large scale features.

Fuse industry with art/ land art – encourage creativity alongside greening – provide an inspiring and cutting edge area – on a scale not seen in London – be adventurous.

Love the idea of using a matisse painting or similar abstract assortment of shapes – to create a concept diagram, and an underlying grid – on which to help guide the design.

I like the seasonal interest of central park – the autumnal colours – selection of trees with seasonal interest – reds, auburns, rusty colours – planting incorporating yellows – reflecting the warmth of existing materials that predominate, and also compliments the greys and drabness. A warm planting scheme.
